Award nominations accepted now through August 18

Township of King, Ont. (July 28, 2025) — Put a spotlight on a historic property found in the Township of King: a building, structure, streetscape, district or natural heritage landscape of historical, architectural or cultural interest or value. Nominations for the prestigious 2025 King Township Heritage Award opened on July 7 and can be submitted online now through August 18 at king.ca/heritage.

The King Heritage Award is presented annually by the King Township Heritage Advisory Committee and recognizes excellence in the preservation, maintenance, restoration and/or enhancement of the Township's cultural heritage resources.

The Heritage Advisory Committee will evaluate the nominees based on predetermined criteria, focusing on cultural heritage value and interest. They will also assess the extent to which a property stands out due to the creativity used in its conservation and the evident commitment from current owners to maintaining or improving the building.

All nominations will be reviewed and selected by the Heritage Advisory Committee. The winning property will be honoured with a framed rendering of their home by a local artist at a Council meeting later this year. A copy of the artist’s rendering is also placed in one of the meeting rooms at the King Township Municipal Centre.

The Heritage Advisory Committee is made up of volunteers with expertise in heritage and community matters and advises Council on the conservation and management of the Township's cultural heritage resources.

The Committee is supported by the Heritage Coordinator in the Planning Division and meets once a month to discuss heritage-related matters in the Township.

2024 King Township Heritage Award Winner

The recipient of the 2024 King Township Heritage Award was the heritage home at 2145 King Road in King City. This beautifully preserved two-storey brick home, built circa 1891, showcases stunning architectural features and deep historical roots in King Township. Originally owned by blacksmith Henry Kitchen and later the Patton family, this property is a cherished part of our community’s heritage. The current owner, Carmela Greco, was presented with a framed rendering of the home by local artist Phyllis Vernon during the Council Meeting on November 25, 2024.

King’s Heritage StoryMap

Earlier this year, King launched its new Geographic Information System "Heritage StoryMap” online at king.ca/heritage. This interactive web-based tool is a gateway to exploring all listed and designated heritage properties across the Township, featuring fascinating historical descriptions. Listed properties are recognized for their potential cultural heritage value and flagged for further evaluation if demolition is proposed. Designated properties have a legal status under the Ontario Heritage Act providing stronger protection and ensuring their heritage attributes are preserved.
