The Municipal Election is on Monday, October 26, 2026. The Candidate Registration Period opens on May 1, 2026 and ends on August 21, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.

The nomination forms required by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, and information guides provided by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing, are now available under Election Guides and Resources. A complete nomination package will be available under Information for Candidates.

Running In A Municipal and School Board Election
To run for municipal Council, candidates must be:
- a Canadian citizen aged 18 or older and qualify as a resident or non-resident elector (someone who does not reside in King Township but rents or owns property where the nomination is filed);
- the spouse of an owner or tenant of property in King Township;
- eligible to vote in King Township;
- eligible to hold office on the day you file your nomination, meaning if you are 17 years old must wait until they’ve turned 18 to file their nomination.
To run for a trustee position on a school board you must be:
- a Canadian citizen aged 18 or older and meet other qualifications to vote for the school board;
- a resident within the jurisdiction of the board and eligible to vote in a school board election.
The Nomination period opens on Friday, May 1 at 9 a.m. and closes on Friday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m.
To file your nomination for Council or School Board Trustee in the 2026 Municipal Election please email Suzanne Cudnik, Elections Coordinator at elections@king.ca to schedule an appointment. All appointments will take place at the King Township Municipal Centre.
The following are required by the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 to file your nomination, please ensure to bring these with you for your appointment:
- Completed Nomination Paper: Form 1 (to be signed in front of the Clerk or designate).
- Endorsement of Nomination: Form 2 (original signatures required, it is recommended that you collect more than 25).
- Current acceptable identification, including:
- Your Ontario driver’s licence, Ontario health card (name and address required on card), mortgage, lease or rental agreement.
- If an agent is filing a nomination on your behalf, the agent must provide the above documents as well as their own identification.
- Nomination filing fee ($200 for mayoral candidates, $100 for all other candidates, payable by cash, credit or debit card, certified cheque or money order).

Candidates are not permitted to spend or raise funds for their election campaign until their nomination has been filed with the Clerk (filing may be completed between May 1 and August 21 at 2:00 p.m.).
Filing Fees
Interested candidates will be required to pay the following refundable filing fees at the time of their nomination:
- $200 for the Head of Council (Mayor).
- $100 for Councillor and School Board Trustee.
An election sign permit is only issued to an Official Candidate or Registered Third Party Advertiser.
Applicants will need to complete an election sign permit application form and submit along with the required fee and deposit. More information can be found through this link.
Municipal Elections
Election signs for the 2026 Municipal Elections may be installed as of 12:01 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2026 and must be removed by 12:01 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2026 (within 72 hours immediately following the day of the election).
Election signage must comply with the Township of King sign by-law and applicable York Region by-laws.
Please note that both Candidates and Third Party Advertisers ('TPA") are required to identify themselves on campaign advertisements and signs, so that it is clear who is responsible for each sign and advertisement that appears or is broadcast.
Federal & Provincial Elections
Election signs will be permitted in the Township one (1) day following the writ. Signs at Candidate Headquarters will be permitted following the issuance of an Election Sign Permit.
Registered Third Party Election Signs
Any advertising sign that supports or opposes a candidate of a federal, provincial, or municipal election requires a Third Party Election Sign permit.
Once a Third Party is registered with the Clerk's office, the TPA can apply for a Third Party Election Sign permit to promote or oppose any candidate that the electors in the municipality can vote for (local council, school board trustee positions, and regional or county council offices).
Third party advertising must be done independently of candidates, who are not able to direct a third party or register as a third party.

Additional Resources
Hosted in partnership by King Township, the Town of Stouffville and the City of Vaughan, these information sessions, delivered by the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing (MMAH), are designed to help prospective candidates understand the nomination process, key deadlines, campaign rules, financial responsibilities, and the role of elected officials. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about legislative requirements and ask questions to ensure they are prepared before filing their nomination.

While Elections Ontario maintains the Voters List for municipal elections, the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) ensures that your school support designation remains current. Ensure your school support information is updated by June 1.
