In an effort to improve road safety, King Township is lowering the speed limits on ubran local streets from 50 km/h to 40 km/h.

“The health and safety of our residents is the number one priority of council and staff,” said King Township Mayor Steve Pellegrini. “In fact, road and traffic safety is one of the most consistent issues we hear about from residents. That’s why we’ve taken concrete steps to make our roads safer.”

The speed limit reduction was one outcome of a traffic calming strategy completed last November. One of its key recommendations was that the default speed limit on all local and collector roads should be reduced to 40 km/h.

The uniform reduction of the speed limit will provide a consistent message to drivers to slow down in residential areas throughout King Township.

A recent safety review on 19th Sideroad endorsed reducing the speed limit from 50km/hr to 40km/hr due to the road’s numerous vertical and horizontal curves. Its speed reduction was also approved by council.

Staff conducted a review of the Township’s regulatory traffic by-law to determine the adequacy of the existing by-law. It was determined that there were 206 road segments that needed to be revised in order to address the 40 km/h speed reduction requirement throughout the Township as recommended by the Traffic Calming Strategy.

Implementation requires posting gateway signage with “40 km/h begins” and “40 km/h ends” at the neighbourhood entrance locations where urban local and collector roads are intersecting with arterial or rural roads.
