Here’s everything residents need to know to keep safe

Township of King, Ont. (January 15, 2026) — King Township declared a Significant Weather Event, effective Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 11:00 p.m.

The Township urges all to use extreme caution as the hazard poses a significant danger to all roadway users. Significant snowfall is expected to continue through Thursday afternoon with accumulations of 15-20 cm. The heavy snowfall will reduce visibility at times. Travel will be challenging, and isolated power outages are possible.

A reminder that plowing occurs in priority sequence—major roads first, followed by neighbourhood roads and cul-de-sacs last—to ensure that fire and emergency services are able to drive on the roads and respond to calls.

Parking restrictions are in effect. No parking on roads is permitted during plowing, sanding or salting.

Road servicing is typically completed within a 12-hour period after the snowfall is complete. It can take longer during a Significant Weather Event.

The senior snow removal assistance program will begin this evening after roads and sidewalks are plowed. Clearing of snow is provided one car-width only for the windrow.

Although crews are very conscious in following route schedules, sometimes streets may be missed. To report an oversight, call ServiceKing at 905-833-5321 or email serviceking@king.ca

Program cancellations and closures

Registered and drop-in recreation programming at all King Township facilities is cancelled until noon today, Thursday, January 15, due to inclement weather. All affected registered program participants have been notified via email by the Township.

At this time, recreation programming scheduled to start after 12 p.m. is running as scheduled.

Recreation facilities remain open and permits are unaffected.

Cold Creek Conservation Area and all King Township Public Library branches are closed.

Staff continue to assess the situation, and regular updates will be provided as they become available.

Snow clearing safety tips

With the heavy snowfall that we are experiencing, residents are reminded to clear snow early and often. Fresh snow is much lighter and easier to manage. Tackling it in stages can prevent buildup and reduce strain on your body.

Here are a few tips to help manage the snowfall safely:

  • Shovel in layers – remove snow throughout the storm instead of all at once.
  • Push, don’t lift when possible to reduce the risk of injury.
  • Take small loads if lifting is necessary; wet snow gets heavy fast.
  • Salt or sand icy areas to improve traction.
  • Dress warmly and stay visible when clearing outside.
  • Keep fire hydrants and catch basins clear if you’re able to.
  • Take breaks and stay hydrated.
  • Use a snow blower or electric snow shovel to help clear snow faster easier.
  • Don’t do it alone – ask a neighbour, family member, consider a private contractor, or ask a friend for help. Teamwork keeps everyone safer.
