Township of King, Ont. — In partnership with the Indigenous Action Committee, King Township will host a community gathering to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on Monday, Sept. 30, at the King Heritage & Culture Centre from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

This event will offer an evening of reflection and education, bringing the community together to honor the legacy of residential school survivors, their families and the children who never returned home. The gathering will feature Indigenous speakers, traditional drumming, singing, and dancing, along with food, crafts, and other cultural activities. Attendees can also view a collection of Indigenous artifacts and learn more about their historical significance.

As a symbol of recognition for the lives impacted by the residential school system, participants are encouraged to wear orange shirts. Orange shirts and sweaters will be available for purchase at the event, with proceeds going to the Orange Shirt Society and the Indian Residential School Survivors Society.

Due to limited parking at the King Heritage & Culture Centre, guests are encouraged to park at the King Township Municipal Centre, where a shuttle service will provide transportation to and from the event.

Background on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, observed on Sept. 30, was established as a federal statutory holiday in 2021. It honours the survivors of residential schools, their families and the children who never returned home. The day also coincides with Orange Shirt Day, which began in 2013 as a grassroots movement to raise awareness about the lasting trauma of the residential school system and the ongoing impacts on Indigenous communities. The orange shirt symbolizes the stripping away of Indigenous culture and identity during the residential school era.

King Township invites all members of the community to attend this important event to reflect, learn and work together toward reconciliation.
