Township of King, Ont.—The current local fire hazard rating is high due to the hot and dry conditions. The rating is set by the Fire Chief in co-ordination with fellow York Region Fire Departments. King Fire and Emergency Services asks residents to use extra caution when using fire outdoors, including outdoor firepits, open air burning or wood-fired barbecues.
Follow this fire safety checklist to do your part to keep flames under control:
- Never leave a fire of any kind unattended
- Keep a garden hose close
- Be aware of changing winds and have a method to extinguish a fire close at hand
For recreational fires:
- Burn or use only clean, dry wood
- Fires must be kept small – no more than 0.75 metres (30 inches) in diameter and no more than 0.75 metres (30 inches) in height
- Fire must be at least three metres (10 feet) from your home, lot line, trees, fences, vehicles, overhead wires or any other combustible material
- If using an outdoor fireplace, it must be installed on a non-combustible surface
If burning with an open-air burn permit, follow all regulations set out in Schedule A of By-law #2015-109. For more information about outdoor burning, including the by-law and items you cannot burn, visit king.ca/BurningInKing.
The fire rating may change and a ban could be placed in effect if conditions worsen.
