Voter Registration

• Voting Eligibility

  To be eligible to vote in the municipal election, you must be:

  • 18 years of age or older;
  • a Canadian citizen; and
  • a resident of King Township; or
  • a non-resident who owns or rents property in King Township; or
  • the spouse of an owner or tenant of property in King Township.

  If you’re temporarily living outside of Ontario, you may be eligible to add yourself to the Register of Absentee Voters.

  If you’re 16 or 17 and reside in Ontario, you can add yourself to the Ontario Register of Future Voters.

• King Township Government Structure

  King Township is governed by an elected Mayor and six Councillors, each representing one of the six wards within the Township. As head of Council, the Mayor represents the Township on York Regional Council. King Township Council sets policy and directs the affairs of the municipality with assistance from a staff of dedicated full-time employees. The Municipal Elections Act requires that municipal elections be held every four years.

• Operating Under a Two-Tier Government Structure

  King Township operates under a two-tier municipal government structure consisting of a lower-tier (the Township) and an upper-tier (York Region). Both tiers work together to provide services to support the maintenance and well-being of the local and regional community.

  Consisting of nine municipalities, York Region manages public transit, water, emergency medical services while King Township provides services such as fire and by-law enforcement, community planning and growth management, economic development, curb-side garbage collection, recreational programs and facilities, parks, libraries and more.

• York Region Government Structure

  York Regional Council has 22 members. Council sets policies, direction and budgets for York Region.

  Members of York Regional Council are elected in what is known as a "double direct" form of election. In this type of system, those elected as Mayor or Regional Councillor for a local municipality earn a seat on both Local Council and Regional Council for four years.

  The Chair of Regional Council is elected by members of Regional Council at the first meeting of the term or directly appointed by the province and serves for a four-year term.

  The Mayor of King Township serves as the only representative from the municipality on York Region Council.

• School Boards and Changing School Support

  King Township has four school boards: York Region District School Board, York Catholic District School Board, Consieller Scolaire Viamonde (French Public) and Consieller Conseil Scolaire Catholique MonAvenir (French Separate).
