Traffic Safety

Welcome to our Traffic Safety page. Here you'll find information about how we work to keep our roads safe for all users - drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, and residents. Our approach includes Traffic Calming and Traffic Control to reduce speeding, improve visibility, and support safe travel throughout the Township.

What Is Traffic Safety?

Traffic safety refers to the strategies, tools, and policies used to prevent collisions, reduce speeding, and protect all road users. It includes physical road design, enforcement programs, signage, and public education. Our goal is to create safer streets through thoughtful planning and community input. Traffic Safety includes Traffic Calming and Traffic Control:

Traffic Calming

Traffic calming helps reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety in residential areas, school zones, and other high-risk locations. These tools are designed to encourage safer driving behavior and create a more comfortable environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

Our traffic calming measures include:

  • Speed Humps Raised sections of roadway that slow down vehicles while maintaining access for emergency and service vehicles.
  • Flexible Bollards Vertical posts installed to visually narrow lanes, guide traffic, and discourage speeding or unsafe turns.
  • Radar Speed Boards Electronic signs that display a driver’s speed in real-time, raising awareness and encouraging voluntary speed reduction.
  • Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) Camera systems used to monitor and enforce speed limits in designated areas, especially near schools and community zones.
  • Other Measures May include curb extensions, pavement markings, and signage.

These tools are selected based on traffic studies, resident feedback, and engineering review. Our goal is to apply the right solution in the right place to improve safety and support community well-being.

Traffic Control

Traffic control helps manage the safe and efficient movement of vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists throughout the Township. These measures are guided by provincial standards and local policies to ensure consistency, visibility, and safety across all roadways.

Our traffic control tools include:

  • Stop Signs Installed at key intersections to regulate right-of-way and improve safety for all road users.
  • No Parking Signs Used to maintain clear sightlines, prevent congestion, and ensure safe access for emergency and service vehicles.
  • Sightline Reviews Assessments conducted to ensure visibility at intersections, driveways, and pedestrian crossings is not obstructed by vegetation, signage, or parked vehicles.
  • Speed Reduction Studies Data-driven reviews of traffic patterns and speeds to determine if lower speed limits or calming measures are needed in specific areas.
  • Other Signage and Controls Includes yield signs, pedestrian crossing signs, school zone indicators, and seasonal or event-based traffic adjustments.

These controls are regularly reviewed and updated based on community feedback, safety audits, and engineering assessments.
