The third week of October 17-23 is recognized as Waste Reduction Week in Canada. Daily themes relating to specific waste streams have been identified with a focus on the waste reduction component of a circular economy. To learn more about the Circular Economy and Waste Reduction Week visit Waste Reduction Week in Canada's website.

Circular Economy Monday - Take, Make, Reuse, Share, Replenish, Repair, Recycle. The solution is the circular economy; a new model of consumption where we design products so resources can be reused and reinvested into new products again and again.

Textile TuesdayOne of the biggest misconceptions that consumers have is that we should only donate clothes that are gently used. Ninety per cent of all people in Ontario donate at least some of their clothes, but whenever we have a pile of unwanted clothing, we sort it based on what we imagine to be valuable and donate only the “good” stuff. The rest goes into the waste bin. 85%, ends up in our landfills, taking up valuable space, releasing methane and toxic leachate and contributing to climate change. Next time you have a holey sock, don’t through it in the garbage, add it to your donation pile and schedule a pickup or drop it off at one of our Diabetes Canada textile donation locations.

E-Waste Wednesday - Do you have old electronics collecting dust at home? Bring your unwanted electronics to the Community Electronic Recycling Event at the Schomberg Parks Yard Parking Lot at 251 Western Avenue, Schomberg between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 22nd, to ensure they are disposed of safely, recycled and kept out of the landfill.

Plastics Thursday - Plastic does have its benefits, however to achieve a circular economy we have to eliminate and redesign products to reduce problematic plastics. For more information check out the story of plastics

Food Waste Friday - Fall is the perfect time to start a worm bin to have "black gold" ready for spring planting. Join us for a worm composting workshop at Night at the Creepy Creek, hosted by Cathy's Crawly Composters to learn about worms and vermicomposting - a viable solution for anywhere without space for outdoor composting.

Sharing Economy Saturday - Curbside Giveaway Day. Starting at 7 a.m. take any unwanted items to the cub, marked "FREE", for others to pick up and take to a good home. Remove all leftover items by 5 p.m. This is a great way to recycle and clean out some of that extra stuff or find some items for free.

Swap & Repair Sunday  - Stay tuned for details about our upcoming Repair Cafe!
