Attend an Open House at King Fire Station 3-4 on October 4, featuring live demonstrations, tours, games, giveaways, and Sparky the Fire Dog
Township of King, Ont. (Sep. 26, 2025) — October 5 to 11 marks Fire Prevention Week and King Fire and Emergency Services is joining forces with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®) to promote this year’s FPW campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.” The campaign highlights how important it is to buy, charge, and recycle lithium-ion batteries safely.
From smartphones, tablets, and laptops to power tools, e-cigarettes, headphones and toys, lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we rely on every day. While these batteries are efficient and widely used, they can pose serious fire risks if damaged, misused or improperly charged. Overheating, fires, and even explosions are possible when safe practices are overlooked.
“Lithium-ion batteries are powerful, convenient, and nearly everywhere in our daily lives,” said Fire Chief Courtney Allen. By understanding how to use them properly and following the Buy, Charge, and Recycle Safely approach, we can all reduce the risk of fire in our homes.”
Residents are encouraged to look around their homes, identify which devices use lithium-ion batteries, and take the time to learn and apply safe handling practices. King Fire and Emergency Services offers these key battery safety tips and guidelines:
Buy Listed Products
- Only use batteries and chargers that are certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
- Many products sold online and in stores may not meet safety standards and could increase the risk of fire.
Charge Safely
- Always use the cords that came with the product to charge.
- If you need a new charger, buy one from the manufacturer.
- Charge your device on hard, flat surfaces away from flammable materials.
- Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it or remove the battery when fully charged. Do not charge batteries overnight or leave unattended.
Recycle Responsibly
- Stop using batteries that show signs of damage, overheating or leaking.
- Dispose of lithium-ion batteries at proper recycling facilities – never in household trash because they could start a fire. Recycle your device or battery at a safe battery recycling location. For information, visit call2recycle.ca.
