Take notice that the Council of the Corporation of the Township of King, at its meeting held on September 15, 2025, considered an application under Section 33 of the Ontario Heritage Act to alter the Marylake Gatehouse, a structure on a property “designated” under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act  municipally known as 13760 Keele Street, in the Township of King, in the Regional Municipality of York, Province of Ontario.

The decision of the Council of the Corporation of the Township of King, regarding the application under the Ontario Heritage Act is as follows:

  1. That Council receive Report GMS-HER-2025-006 for information.
  2. That Council approved the following proposed works on the Marylake Gatehouse outlined in Heritage Permit Application HP-25-02:

a. Replacement of 30 existing windows with casement windows, which are to have similar muntin patterns as the existing windows.

b. Repair of damaged roof ridge cap with cast-in-place concrete, to be completed in a similar colour to the existing roof ridge cap.

c. Replacement of slate roof shingles with Highland Slate Asphalt Shingles, in a similar colour to existing slate shingles.

3. That Council approve Heritage Permit Application HP-25-02 for eligibility under the Township’s Heritage Grant Program, and that a grant of $12,000 be awarded, representing the maximum allowable grant, in accordance with the program guidelines, including the use of reserve funds.

Description of Property

The subject property is approximately 227 hectares and is located on the west side of Keele Street, immediately north of the 15th Sideroad. The subject lands are characterized by expansive natural landscape and historic built features, including the castle-style stone gatehouse, which is the subject of this Application. The Marylake Augustinian Monastery gatehouse was designated as a heritage site and included on the Township’s Municipal Heritage Register in 1984 under Township of King Bylaw 84-107. The gatehouse was designed by E.J. Lennox and constructed circa 1911 as an entrance feature to the summer estate and farm property. The project was funded by the property owner, Canadian financier Sir Henry Pellat, otherwise known for his construction of Casa Loma, which E.J. Lennox also designed, in the City of Toronto (constructed circa 1911- 1914).

Appeal to the Ontario Land Tribunal

Take Notice that an appeal of the decision of the Council of the Corporation of the Township of King may be made by submitting a Notice of Appeal with the Ontario Land Tribunal (OLT) and Township Clerk of the Corporation of the Township of King, Attention: Denny Timm, Township Clerk, 2585 King Road, King City, ON, L7B 1A1, by 4:30 p.m. on or before October 24, 2025 (within 30 days of this notice). A Notice of Appeal must set out the reasons for the objection to the approval of the application to alter the Marylake Gatehouse and be accompanied by the fees charged by the OLT and the Township . If you wish to appeal to the OLT or request a fee reduction for an appeal, forms are available from the OLT website at https://olt.gov.on.ca/appeals-process/forms

Who Can File An Appeal

Only the owner of the property may appeal the decision of Council of the Township of King to the OLT under Part IV, Section 33 of the Ontario Heritage Act, and only where Council has consented to an application to alter a property with certain terms or conditions or refuses the application to alter a property.
