Learn everything you need to know about the new recycling collection system
Township of King, Ont. (January 8, 2026) —The Province of Ontario is now responsible for municipal recycling programs as part of a broader mandate under the Provincial Regulation 391/21 in the Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, 2016. In compliance with the province-wide mandate, King Township has transitioned to the new recycling collection system, operated by Circular Materials.
Green For Life Environmental (GFL) has been contracted by Circular Materials to provide curbside collection in King Township and is the contact for all recycling inquiries.
Here’s everything residents need to know about the new recycling system:
New recycling carts, new bi-weekly schedule
King Township households received a 360-litre wheeled, lidded recycling cart ahead of the transition, and recycling collection has moved to a bi-weekly schedule. All materials must be placed inside the newly issued recycling carts, with the lid fully closed to be ready for collection pick up. Material placed outside the recycling cart or in a blue box will not be collected.
What if my new 360-litre cart isn’t large enough for two weeks of recycling?
Starting the week of January 12, residents can apply online at circularmaterials.ca/king for a second 360-litre recycling cart at no cost; this is the only size option available for a second cart. This only applies to households with a 360-litre recycling cart. A second cart will not be provided for households which requested an exchange for the smaller 240-litre size recycling cart.
More information about the second cart application process will be shared with residents as soon as the form is available online. We appreciate your patience while Circular Materials finalizes the details in order to support residents' needs.
Can I exchange my standard 360-litre cart for a smaller one?
Yes. If the 360-litre cart size does not meet your needs, you may request an exchange for a smaller 240-litre cart by completing the Recycling Cart Exchange Request Form, available online at circularmaterials.ca/king.
Before requesting an exchange, it is recommended that you try the cart for at least three bi-weekly pick-ups to gauge your actual capacity needs. Please keep in mind that recycling collection has moved from a weekly to a bi-weekly schedule, the list of accepted materials expanded, all items must fit inside the cart with the lid closed, and only one cart exchange will be permitted per address.
Has my collection day changed?
No. While collection frequency has changed from weekly to bi-weekly, your pickup day remains the same. For more information on your collection day, view the 2026 Waste Collection Schedule at king.ca/waste.
How should I set out my cart for collection?
Below are some guidelines for setting out your recycling cart to ensure items are collected. As a reminder, all materials must be placed inside of the newly issued recycling carts, with the lid fully closed.
- Set your recycling cart so that the wheels are away from the curb (towards your home, and the lid opens to the street).
- Place recycling and garbage carts at least 3 feet in front of or beside fences or vehicles.
- Place your cart on a flat surface clear of any snow and ice.
What is included on the expanded list of accepted materials?
Residents are now able to recycle more materials, including:
- Black plastic containers
- Hot and cold beverage cups (coffee cups)
- Frozen juice containers
- Ice cream tubs
- Deodorant stick containers and toothpaste tubes
- Chip bags and food wrapping (including plastic and foil wrappers)
- Pet food bags
- Styrofoam™
For the full list of accepted materials, visit circularmaterials.ca/king.
What can I do with my old blue box?
Old recycling blue boxes will not be accepted in your curbside recycling neither empty or full. Residents can drop off old blue boxes for recycling now through February 27 at a designated drop off location inside select King Township facilities. Please ensure you empty and clean blue boxes prior to drop off at one of the following locations during regular operating hours:
- King Township Municipal Centre, 2585 King Road, King City
- Trisan Centre, 25 Dillane Drive, Schomberg
- Dr. William Laceby Nobleton Community Centre & Arena, 15 Old King Road, Nobleton
- Zancor Centre, 1600 15 Sideroad, King City
What accommodation is available for residents with a physical disability and accessibility needs?
Residents experiencing a temporary or permanent physical disability that prevents them from setting out their recycling cart at the curb may qualify for assisted collection service through the Special Accommodation Recycling Service Application. A physician’s note is required to apply for this assisted service.
Who can I contact regarding recycling inquiries?
Please call GFL at 1-833-779-4351 or email N6Recycling@gflenv.com if you have questions regarding missed collection, recycling carts and more.
