After five months of voting and over 230 entrees, King Township now has an official bird:  the Black-capped Chickadee! King Township received Bird Friendly Certification from Nature Canada (Bird Friendly City Nature Canada) in March 2023 which was followed by an official bird naming contest that launched on World Migratory Bird Day on May 13 and closed on October 6.

The Black-Capped Chickadee is a fantastic bird to represent King as it is almost universally considered “cute” thanks to its oversized round head, tiny body and curiosity about everything, as described by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. The chickadee’s black cap and bib, white cheeks, gray back, wings and tail and whitish underside with buffy sides are distinctive. Its habit of investigating people and everything else in its home territory and quickness to discover bird feeders, make it one of the first birds most people learn.
