KING CITY, ONT.—The Township of King is asking residents to mark Waste Reduction Week by decreasing the amount of garbage they send to landfills.

Waste Reduction Week in Canada is held every October as a reminder of the ways everyone can reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable consumption.

In celebration of Canada's 20th Waste Reduction Week (Oct.18 to Oct. 24), King is offering a series of engagement opportunities that coincide with the Waste Reduction Week themes. The daily themes are:

  • Tuesday – Reuse: The Township of King textile donation bins are conveniently located at community facilities providing secure, 24/7 access for the donations of all used textiles. Since March 2017, King has diverted 198,941lbs (and counting!) of textiles from landfill sites.
  • Wednesday – Recycle: Drive through electronic recycling at the Municipal Centre at 2585 King Road between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
  • Thursday – Reduce: King has partnered with the Toronto Region Conservation Authority to offer a free online educational workshop between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to learn about microplastics and what we can do to make a difference. Pre-registration is required.
  • Friday – Repurpose: Join us for a fun workshop hosted by Cathy’s Crawly Composters to learn about worms and vermicomposting at the Cold Creek Conservation Area between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Pre-registration is required.

For more information on these events, please visit http://www.king.ca/WasteReductionWeek.

You can reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills by being diligent each week when sorting through your waste and recyclables. Composting is also a great way to reduce the amount of waste landing in garbage bags.

King is making it easy to become a recycling expert with its free Recycle Coach app.

The app has a comprehensive “What Goes Where?” search tool, including local disposal information, disposal costs and recycling event dates.

Residents are encouraged to visit http://www.king.ca/waste to learn more. Recycle Coach is available on desktop and mobile. The free app is available for download on iOS and Android devices.

Mayor Steve Pellegrini

“In recognition of Waste Reduction Week, we’re asking residents to do their part by being mindful of how they dispose of their waste. By using our Recycle Coach app and composting, it’s easier than ever to know exactly how you can reduce the amount of waste you’re sending to a landfill each week. Let’s all do our part to keep King beautiful for generations to come.”
