The action plan follows King’s recognition by the Government of Ontario for its achievements in building an Age‑Friendly Community

Township of King, Ont. (March 27, 2026) King Township is taking important steps toward becoming a more inclusive, accessible and supportive community for residents aged 55 and over, who represent the fastest-growing population segment. Following extensive community and stakeholder consultation, King’s Age-Friendly Community Action Plan was endorsed by Council during the Council Meeting on Monday, Mar. 23. This action plan follows King Township’s recognition by the Government of Ontario on January 18 for its achievements in building an Age‑Friendly Community.

Guided by the Township’s 2023–2026 Corporate Strategic Plan, King Township has worked closely with Council, municipal staff, the Age‑Friendly King Advisory Committee, residents aged 55+, and community stakeholders to shape the action plan. Engagement included surveys and workshops that gathered feedback on what is working well, areas for improvement and priorities for the future.

The community feedback highlighted key trends and needs, including housing options for older adults, transportation and mobility challenges, communication preferences, and opportunities for greater participation and social connection. Survey results also showed strong levels of physical health and civic participation among older residents, alongside a desire for improved access to services, programs and information.

This input sets out a vision to make King Township “a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community that celebrates the diverse needs of all residents, regardless of age” and will be guided by eight actionable priorities:

  1. Housing: Advance policies and programs that enable a diverse range of housing types that support aging in place and intergenerational living.
  2. Mobility and Transportation: Expand mobility options, enhance pedestrian and cycling safety, and improve regional transit connections.
  3. Communication and Information: Strengthen communication channels, improve accessibility of information, support digital literacy, and advance connectivity initiatives.
  4. Community Support and Health Services: Build strong partnerships with health providers and community organizations to enhance access to supports and services.
  5. Respect and Inclusion: Foster an inclusive community through recognition programs, intergenerational initiatives, and equitable service protocols.
  6. Social Participation: Expand program offerings across the Township, support senior spaces, and improve access to recreation and community activities.
  7. Safety and Accessibility: Enhance built-environments that limit the use of outdoor spaces and public buildings for residents with mobility challenges or safety concerns.
  8. Civic Engagement and Employment: Increase opportunities for volunteerism, civic participation, and employment for older adults.

Together, these priorities focus on removing barriers, strengthening programs and supports, enabling healthy ageing, building partnerships and allocating resources where they are most needed.

The Age-Friendly King Action Plan will guide future policies, programs and partnerships to ensure King Township remains a welcoming, supportive place for residents to age well and stay connected to community life.

Age-Friendly Community recognition

On Sunday, Jan. 18, King Township was recognized by the Government of Ontario for its achievements in building an Age-Friendly Community. The award was presented at the Age-Friendly Community Recognition Ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 18, coinciding with the 2026 Rural Ontario Municipalities Association (ROMA) conference.

In Ontario, Age-Friendly Communities create more accessible physical and social spaces for people of all ages and abilities, particularly supporting older adults and those with disabilities to live independently, actively, and inclusively. Age-Friendly Communities respond to the challenges of an ageing population by fostering safe, inclusive policies, programs, and services that enable contributions to community life while aligning with the province’s accessibility goals.

Key milestones to achieving Age-Friendly Community recognition

  • Created the King Age-Friendly Community (AFC) Advisory Committee to support the development and execution of the King Age-Friendly Community Action Plan.
  • Launched an online survey from May to July 2025, which saw 452 residents 55+ providing their feedback on what ageing gracefully looks like to them, assisting the development of the Age-Friendly Community Action Plan.
  • Hosted various Public Open Houses throughout September 2025, providing an opportunity for residents to engage in-person, learn more and share their thoughts with staff and members of the AFC Advisory Committee on the development of the Age-Friendly Community Action Plan.
  • Celebrated the grand openings of the Nobleton Senior Program Room and the King City Seniors Centre backyard patio space in the fall of 2025, welcoming inclusive and empowering hubs that support wellness, learning and social connection.

To support its ongoing vision and commitment, King Township offers a variety of programs and services that are designed to promote wellness and encourage lifelong learning and connections – ensuring seniors can stay healthy, active, connected and engaged. This includes the King Connections 55+ Membership Program, which brings year-round access to a variety of programs, services, educational workshops, events and excursions at a discounted cost, along with weekly email updates.
