The annual half-load period to limit vehicle weights to 5,000 kgs (5 tonnes) per axle has been implemented on designated Township roads effective March 1st, to May 31st.
Some year round restrictions apply. For more information please refer to the frequently asked questions below.
‘Half-load restrictions’ are placed on select roadways within the Township during the spring thaw. When a half-load restriction is in place, it means that vehicles over 5,000 kgs (5 tonnes) per axle are not permitted to use the roadway. Passenger vehicles are exempt from the restriction. Larger vehicles such as dump trucks, delivery trucks, concrete trucks and heavy equipment floats that haul excavators, bulldozers and cranes are included. This restriction is due to the need to protect the road and the road base from being permanently damaged.
What law(s) supports this?
Section 122 of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) along with Township Bylaw 2017-103.
How does a road get permanently damaged?
In the spring, frost comes out of the ground. As moisture comes out of the road base, the road becomes saturated, softer and weaker. Heavy loads can cause the road to sink and break apart, which can lead to permanent damage.
Why are half-load restrictions imposed?
To avoid the premature damaging of our roadways and subsequent rebuilding after every spring thaw, which would cost a lot of taxpayer dollars, the Township imposes restrictions to give the roads time to properly shed the frost.
When are half-load restrictions in place?
Schedule F – Reduced Loads, of the Roads By-Law 2017-103, identifies the period for each roadway (Generally March 1 to May 31). The Director of Public Works has the delegated authority to amend the restriction based on the winter season and the road conditions.
Can I get a half-load restriction exemption?
In certain circumstances a half-load exemption can be granted by the Director of Public Works. Applications can be found here. Vehicles used exclusively for the transportation of milk, fire apparatus, vehicles operated by or on behalf of the Township transporting waste, public utility emergency vehicles or vehicles used to transport passengers for compensation solely within the limits of the Township are exempt.
