King Township provides marriage licence and civil marriage ceremony services by appointment only. Learn more about the steps you need to take before you get married at ServiceOntario.
Applying for a Marriage Licence
In Ontario, a marriage licence is required to get married. In partnership with ServiceOntario, King Township residents can apply online and schedule an appointment to pickup and pay for your marriage licence.
- King Township resident: $195.00 (tax exempt)
- Non-resident: $245.00 (tax exempt)
Each person getting married must present two original valid pieces of government-issued identification at the appointment. Photocopies or scanned documents will not be accepted. Documents presented in a language other than English must be supported by a translation by an authorized translation service.
Acceptable ID includes:
- Birth Certificate (including any change of name certificate),
- Passport
- Driver’s Licence
- Ontario Photo Card (purple ID card)
- Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate or Record of Immigrant Landing
- Permanent Residency Card
- Nexus Card
- Native Status Card
- Firearms Acquisition Certificate
- Possession and Acquisition Licence
A marriage licence is valid for 90 days, is non-refundable, and can be used anywhere in Ontario. It is recommended that before applying for your licence, you have confirmed the date and location for your marriage ceremony.
Divorces in Canada
If you or your partner were previously married, the original or court certified copy of the Canadian Certificate of Divorce (or Decree Absolute) is required to get your marriage licence. Certified copies are available from the court that granted the divorce.
If you or your partner are remarrying after the death of a spouse, one of the following is required:
- Death Certificate of spouse
- Funeral Director's Statement of Death
- Court order declaring that your spouse has died
Divorce outside of Canada
If you were divorced outside of Canada, you need to provide specific documents to prove that you are no longer married. These documents must be validated by the Government of Ontario and may take up to 4 weeks to process. For more information, vist ServiceOntario.
Civil Marriage Ceremonies
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! King Township offers non-denominational civil marriage ceremonies on Fridays between noon and 3 p.m. at two convenient locations: the King Township Municipal Centre and the King Christian Church, located at the King Heritage & Cultural Centre. To book your date and the mandatory pre-consultation meeting, email marriage@king.ca or call (905) 833-4069.
- King Township resident: $350.00 (HST applicable)
- Non-resident: $550.00 (HST applicable)
- King Township witness: $60 per witness (HST exempt)
Applicants must attend a mandatory 30-minute pre-consultation meeting with the Marriage Officiant at least one week prior to their ceremony. In anticipation of your pre-consultation meeting, you must bring and prepare the following with your Officiant:
- Valid Ontario marriage licence
- Valid photo identification for each person getting married
- Payment of the civil ceremony fee
- If specific vows are to be included during the ceremony, you must provide a written copy, subject to approval (note, a civil ceremony cannot contain any religious readings or connotations of any kind)
- Review of the ceremony format (examples include use of music, photographer, walk-in, etc.)
Arriving for your ceremony
- Bookings at the King Township Municipal Centre allows you access to the Council Chambers for 45-minutes.
- Bookings at the King Christian Church allows you access to the site grounds for one hour.
- Two witnesses are required for your ceremony. Witnesses should be at least 16 years of age and must be able to understand the nature of the ceremony and be able to give evidence of such, if required. If you are unable to provide witnesses for your ceremony, the Township can provide witnesses. A fee is applicable for each witness.
- In anticipation of your ceremony, plan to arrive at least 15-minutes early to your selected venue for any last-minute details.
- Guests should be advised to arrive 15-minutes early for small ceremonies (up to 30 guests) and 30-minutes early for larger ceremonies (up to 100 guests).
Photography
- Photography is welcome throughout the duration of your ceremony and your full scheduled time at your booked venue (45-minutes at King Township Municipal Centre and one hour at the King Christian Church).
Decorations
- Due to health and safety concerns, confetti, petals, bubbles and candles are prohibited. Decorations such as flowers and balloons are welcome, but must be removed within your allotted time.
Prohibited substances
- Alcohol or stimulants are not permitted on site of the civil ceremony and are not to be used by the celebrants and/or their witnesses prior to, during, or following the ceremony. If the Officiant believes that alcohol or other stimulants have been used prior to the ceremony, the ceremony will not proceed.
Interpreters
- Civil marriage ceremonies in King Township are conducted in English. If you require the ceremony to be conducted in a different language, you must provide your own certified interpreter, and they must provide identification and complete an Oath of Interpreter form at the ceremony. The interpreter may not be one of the witnesses.
Accessibility
- Both civil marriage ceremony venues in King Township are accessible with accessible parking available at both main entrances.
Re-scheduling and cancellations
- Changes to the ceremony date or time are allowed at no additional charge, depending on the location and Officiant availability.
- An administration fee will be charged if the ceremony is cancelled less than 48 hours prior to the scheduled date.
- Refunds will not be issued if the ceremony is cancelled on the day of, or if the applicant(s) do not show up.
A "Record of Solemnization of Marriage" will be given to you following the conclusion of your ceremony. This is not a marriage certificate or legal record, but a souvenir of the marriage. Your Officiant will send the signed marriage licence to ServiceOntario for registration.
You can order your official Certificate of marriage through ServiceOntario any time following your marriage ceremony, however your application may take up to 8 weeks after your marriage is registered to be processed.
