As we enter pup season, it's important to be mindful of our interactions with wildlife, particularly young coyotes who may be more visible in our communities. While the temptation to approach them for a closer look or a snapshot may arise, King Township emphasizes the necessity of maintaining a safe distance from wild animals and their habitats.

Coyotes typically give birth from April to May, with litters averaging between four to seven pups. The size of these families varies based on factors such as habitat, food availability and human activity. Sightings and interactions with coyotes tend to peak in spring as they guard their dens.

If you encounter a coyote, it's essential to act cautiously. Keep your distance and ensure that pets are securely leashed. In the event of a direct approach by a coyote, follow these guidelines:

  • Stop: Gather children and small pets if necessary.
  • Stand your ground: Running from a coyote, fox, or domestic dog can escalate the situation.
  • Make yourself appear larger: Wave your arms above your head.
  • Be loud and assertive: Shout, stomp your feet, and clap your hands.
  • Use noise deterrents: Employ your voice or items like pots and pans to create noise.
  • Slowly back away: Leave the area assertively to communicate that the animal is not welcome.
  • Responsible pet ownership: Keep dogs leashed outdoors and cats indoors or in enclosed areas. Most wildlife conflicts involving domestic dogs occur when they are off-leash.

The Township contracts animal control and services from the City of Vaughan Animal Services and the Toronto Wildlife Centre to assist with animal and wildlife concerns in King.
