Fire Prevention Week, October 8-14, 2017
Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!
Fire Prevention Week runs from October 8-14, 2017. This year's theme is "Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!"
Smoke and fire spread fast. There's no time to figure out how to escape AFTER a fire starts. That's why it is so important that everyone has working smoke alarms in their home and that they practice a home fire escape plan with everyone in their household BEFORE there's a fire.
Every year, Fire Departments across Ontario Hold "Fire Prevention Week" the 1st week in October. During this week, Ontario Fire Departments host an open house that welcomes their community to visit and enjoy an informative learning opportunity for children and adults.
October is also recognized as "Fire Prevention Month”. Although we promote fire and life safety year-round, October is targeted as the time frame to extend our efforts to put emphasis on a target message designated by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association). The theme in 2011 was: "Smoke alarms, a sound you can live with” , 2012 was: "Have two ways out, be rabbit ready", 2013 was: "Get cooking with fire safety", 2014 was: "Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month", 2015 was "Hear the Beep Where You Sleep!", and 2016 was "Don't Wait Check the Date".
