The following information is based on legislation
that was in place for the 2006 election.  *NOTE that
the Province of Ontario has passed amendments
to the Ontario Municipal Elections Act which propose
to change the date of the 2010 Municipal Election and
other sections of the Act. These amendments will
come into effect upon Proclamation by the Governor
General.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

When can I file to be a candidate in the 2010 Municipal Election?

Candidates may file a Nomination Paper and a Declaration of Qualifications during regular business hours as of January 4th, 2010, with the last day for filing to be confirmed*.  A prescribed fee which may be refundable, in the amount of $200.00 for head of council and $100.00 for all other candidates payable by cash, certified cheque or money or­der must accompany the registration/nomination form.  Candidates must not spend or raise funds for their election campaign until their registration/nomination form has been filed.

What qualifications do I need to become a candidate?
 
For the position of Mayor or Councillor you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old, reside in the Township or be the owner or tenant of land in the Township (or the spouse of such person), eligible to vote and not prohibited from holding office by law. 
   
How do I file my Nomination Paper?
 
You must bring your Nomination Paper to the Clerk's Department located in the Municipal Offices, 2075 King Road, King City, ON during regular business hours (8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday to Friday).  A Nomination Paper must be completed and signed by the person running for office in the presence of the Clerk or a Commissioner of Oaths.  A Commissioner of Oaths will be available, free of charge, at the Clerk's Department during regular business hours.
    
Can I start raising and spending money on my campaign now?
 
You cannot raise or spend any money on your campaign until you file your Nomination Paper.
