COMMUNITIES IN BLOOM 2009

Communities in Bloom is a volunteer-based, non-profit organization that is committed to fostering civic pride, environmental awareness and municipal beautification through community involvement and the challenge of a national program.

The Township of King and its citizens have competed in Communities in Bloom since 2002. After winning the Provincial title in 2006, we were invited to compete at the National level. Every year of our participation brought an award of five blooms (the highest rating possible).

Over the past 6 years, this Township has continued to improve because of the catalyst this competition has provided. In light of this progress, the 2009 Communities in Bloom Organizing Committee (King Blooms) feel strongly that continued participation in the program is important.  We want to build on the foundation of civic pride, community involvement, heritage consciousness, environmental awareness and beautification.

Communities in Bloom held its first edition in 1995 and 29 participating municipalities were honoured at the first awards ceremonies on Parliament Hill.  The program now includes more than 500 municipalities across the country and an international challenge involving municipalities from the United States, Japan and several European countries allows participants to compete internationally.

Not only has the Township of King initiated dozens of programs and policies to beautify our community while protecting our environment and natural and cultural heritage, we have inspired King Township’s residents, community organizations, and businesses to do likewise.

In King Township, citizens have always taken pride in our historically picturesque villages and hamlets. The Township has initiated programs and policies to beautify our communities and protect our environment and natural cultural heritage. Through participation in Communities in Bloom King Township’s residents, community organizations, and businesses have been encouraged, and their efforts highlighted during the annual Judges' Tour.

How to Get Involved. There are dozens of ways for individuals, community groups and business to get involved in Communities in Bloom. Everything from window box planters, to lush floral displays, to planting trees, to cleaning up a park or ravine, to adopting a park, to preserving our natural and cultural heritage, to promoting Communities in Bloom — it’s all about beautifying spaces and enhancing the quality of life in KING. Feel free to team up with other groups or businesses to fulfill your vision.
