The Dufferin Marsh
The Dufferin Marsh

The Dufferin Marsh is a 5 hectare wetland in the middle of the Village of Schomberg.  It is a remnant feature of the Schomberg River which became isolated when the river was channeled in the 1800's.  Despite its small size there is a high diversity of wetland habitats (marsh, swamp and wet meadow) that support over 50 species of birds, 8 species of frogs and toads and the rare Hill's Pond Weed and Torrey's Manna Grass.

What is unique about the marsh is how accessible it is to the community of Schomberg.  In spring, neighbours can hear the call of the Common Snipe, Wood Duck, Chimney Swift, Chorus Frog and Spring Peeper.  Fireflies glow in the cattails through the month of June and wildflowers put on a colourful display through the summer and fall.

The Duffin Marsh is one of many small and important wetlands in the Greenbelt that form part of the natural link from the Oak Ridges Moraine to Lake Simcoe.

The King Parks, Recreation and Culture Department offer curriculum-based programming in the spring for kindergarten to grade 8.  Other public events are organized by the Dufferin Marsh Committee in cooperation with the Township of King.
